With over Seawind s launched and sailing worldwide, the design has forged a detroit 60 series head bolt torque sequence for its innovative layout, robust construction and simple but safe sailing systems.

However the design has for a long time been overlooked as a true performance cruising catamaran. The Corsair Marine factory has three main buildings with the trimarans being assembled in one building, the Seawinds being assembled in another, and fibreglassing of all designs under one roof in the centre.

This mix of design philosophies, construction methods and experience from the two camps was the catalyst for exploring greater performance and lighter construction methods. Up against some much larger and more expensive designs who claim a high performance pedigree, Talisker has impressed all who have sailed up against her. The Sport now features a number of key performance enhancements designed in collaboration with leading multihull designers, Alan Carwardine and Francois Perus.

I was lucky enough to sail on the first Seawind Sport in Vietnam and witness for myself these features in action, including:. So what does it sail like? Well they say that all cats can sail in 20 knots of breeze, but what do they sail in 10 knots of breeze. The reality is that most cats tend to get bogged down in lighter winds with boat speed falling down to 4 knots or less and as a result, choose to use engines instead of sailing.

This in turn means you use much more fuel and send up your engine hours. I see this all too often with used 2 nd hand cats we sell that have sailed from Europe to Australia with massive engine hours. If you are in remote locations, the replacing fuel on a regular basis can also be a logistical issue with very little clean diesel being available on a wharf. Instead you might need to be prepared to travel to your closest fuel station with jerry cans!

So it pays to sail when you can. Outboards using unleaded petrol can also be an advantage in many remote island locations as most fisherman use outboards rather than diesel motors. As is common in SE Asia, we were delivered a stunning day out on the China Sea with 10 knots of consistent breeze.

Without trying hard, we were achieving 7 knots to windward and pointing at about 34 degrees using the self tacking jib. The daggerboards are very easy to operate using a twin line system to deploy and retrieve. Because the daggerboards float, they pop up easily into their case and need only a little encouragement to be deployed fully into their down position. I always love the twin helms which is standard design practice on the Seawinds, but with the benefit of full shade and weather protection which is not offered on other twin helm designs.

In summary, the Sport was a real delight to sail and its easy to see the performance enhancements while not losing any of the practical living layout features that have made the Seawind such a popular choice for cruising couples and families alike.

You also get all of the benefits of quality assurance, warranty support and resale that comes with a production catamaran. Four Sports have been ordered for the USA already and we are now getting good interest in Australia too as more discover just how good a souped up Seawind can really perform.

For this reason I like the way Seawind have looked at the problem with daggerboards; these appendages certainly make a catamaran sail faster both upwind and down with the added bonus of creating an even-shallower hull depth for closer gunkholing; attractions definitely appealing to monohull cruisers.

The launch of the Sport sees Seawind optimise its old to make it more of a performance craft. Her daggerboards not only improve her pointing ability by five to seven degrees but, when combined with her high aspect retractable rudders, also reduce the wetted surface area by over seven square metres, reducing drag.

But daggerboards are an annoying intrusion, both on deck and down below. In the same way Seawind took the problem of access between aft deck and indoor saloon by developing the fold-up, tri-fold doors, they have made daggerboards an almost invisible addition. Firstly, they do not pull up above the deck line, therefore not encroaching on the side decks. Down below the boards are housed in mouldings integral to the hull walls, barely noticeable and certainly not hindering passage along the hull.

To achieve this, however, may create some compromises in other areas. Probably the most significant worth checking would be to see whether, due to the boards not being so deep, sailing performance is affected. So it all worked out!

Navigation station is central on the port side hull, opposite the encased daggerboard and open to the saloon above. A swingout seat is a simple, neat idea, which, it appears, is one of the design philosophies behind this yacht.

Port hull is the master cabin and the lateral double bed is forward of the nav station. It is a full size at two metres long, stretching under the bridge deck saloon.

Headroom here is centimetres. Beside long hull windows there is a hatch above the bed and another above a handy forward seat for getting dressed. There is plenty of storage space, an oft-heard moan regarding catamaran cabins, including the forward locker providing hanging space along with shelving.

At the aft end of the port hull you step down into the head and shower, a fairly simple set-up that is bright and breezy. This may be a tad gross, but I like having a head up the aft end. It means, most of the time, the smells emanating will be blown straight over the stern instead of back along the deck and into the cockpit. One thing I would also like to note is the use of a shower curtain as opposed to a folding plexiglass door; showering cubicles in yachts nowadays are certainly getting as large as those you would find in a standard hotel room, but I do like the idea of a shower curtain that does not hurt the elbows when the boat inevitably lurches while performing your daily routine.Providing extra power, the Seawind Sport can fly roller-furled jib or screecher, or asymmetrical spinnaker.

The main saloon is roomy, bright, and well-ventilated but not air-conditioned. The port hull contains the master stateroom with an athwartships double berth and a large head compartment aft that is shared with guests in the other hull. The Sport's mainsail is a powerful sail, covering square feet.

In good weather, the trifold saloon door can be folded and cranked up out of the way. Visibility while steering is about as good as it could be without elevating the helm station. The outboard engine controls are located at the port helm. Double spreader rig.I had a full dance card my first day testing boats last week after the show closed down, and as often happens on Chesapeake Bay, even in the fall, the forecast was for increasingly light conditions through the day and on into the next. Fortunately, the boats I was sailing also got increasingly lighter as the day wore on, starting with the Allures I enjoyed an excellent sail in knots of breeze with these prospective buyers seen here enjoying the comfy cockpit with high-backed coamings as well as Pete McGonagle from Swiftsure Yachts they represent Allures in the U.

The boat has twin helms with nice high granny bars and twin rudders. Our test boat had faux-teak cork decking, which Brian told me is greatly appreciated by his dog.

When test-sailing in light conditions it always helps to have light-air sails! Fortunately we had this nice laminated Code Zero-type sail to fly on the Allures.

We were able to carry it as high as 45 degrees AWA and it kept us moving over 6 knots in knots of apparent breeze. And it never hurts to have teeth too. The Allures also boasts a fixed bowsprit backed up by a high-modulus fiber bobstay I wonder if the stay really necessary. The hull is aluminum, but the deck and transom are fiberglass.

One of the most impressive things about the boat is how open the saloon is. On most of these pure centerboard boats with the board descending directly from the bilges rather than from a shoal keel the centerboard trunk dominates this area of the boat and limits layout options.

Our test boat boasted a full battery of electric winches, which Brian, who usually sails alone, delighted in controlling with a wireless remote control he wore around his neck. One neat trick of his, seen here, is to drop the main halyard down this deck hatch into the head below. Another, which we did not get to witness, is hoisting a spinnaker from below through a forward deck hatch while winding up its halyard with the remote. My next ride, approached via dinghy, was the new Seawind Sport catamaran, an Australian design now built in Vietnam.

The same molds are used, but the hulls are extended in the back to increase waterline length. Daggerboards and retractable rudders in cassettes take the place of fixed keels and rudders. Twin outboards that swing up into the boat while sailing are substituted for inboard engines with fixed saildrive legs.

Plus construction is lighter with some carbon in the build and the rig is bigger. The bigger rig in action. That sexy laminated Doyle mainsail is standard. The screecher an optionflying from a sprit, helped keep us moving in the ever-lightening conditions. The wind by now was in the knot range but we still managed to keep the boat sailing at around 3.

One nice feature is that the daggerboards do not protrude above the deck. Another big upgrade over the old is the standard lightweight fiber rigging from Colligo. The rig on our test boat featured lanyards and dead-eyes; I might opt for turnbuckles myself. Controls are well laid out and easy to manage. These opening windows in the front of the cabinhouse keep the bridegdeck saloon nice and cool. The retractable aft bulkhead and doors are a clever feature the shares with its less sporty sister.

When things get snotty you button it down and the saloon becomes a sheltered sanctuary. The interior, even down in the hulls, is very light and airy, as you can see here, looking down from the saloon into the galley in the starboard hull.A newcomer to the production multihull scene could easily be led to believe that there are two kinds of large multihulls in this world: high-performance speedsters and relatively heavy-displacement charter-style cats in which performance necessarily takes a back seat to comfort and lounging space.

There are, however, any number of other boats out there that offer an appealing balance between theses two extremes—including the new Seawind LITE. For years, Seawind has built its reputation on boats that are not just elegantly styled sailers, but seaworthy in the most demanding sense of the word.

For its LITE the company dialed down the bluewater aspect of the boat by swapping out twin power-tilt 20hp Honda outboards for the pair of diesel auxiliaries with saildrives found on its predecessor. The result is a reduction not only in weight but in maintenance, since you no longer have to worry about things like marine growth on the drive legs or electrolysis, since outboards can be fully retraced when not in use. Along these same lines, lightweight laminates have replaced the wood joinery found on the in the interest of reducing weight—a key factor in multihull performance.

The hulls are resin infused in vinylester with a PVC closed-cell foam core.

Decks are vacuum-formed in polyester with a foam core, and there is a molded-in carbon beam forward to promote stiffness.

The single-spread mast is aluminum, and our test boat flew a self-tacking North Sails jib and full-batten main with an aggressive roach. Standing rigging is wire, and deck hardware on our test boat included Lewmar blocks and tracks, rope clutches and winches, and a Harken furler for the working jib.

Build quality is top-notch throughout. Seawind moved production to Vietnam out of necessity after joining forces with Corsair, which had already been successfully building boats there for a number of years. The Aussie currency exchange rate was simply killing the company on the global market. However, offshoring to Vietnam from Australia is a very different proposition than doing so from the United States given its close proximity, and the company has been able to do it without compromising workmanship.

The first thing you notice when you step aboard the LITE are its twin helms, set against the aft bulkhead of the saloon and inboard of the stairs leading up to the side decks. This particular arrangement has the added advantage of allowing you to get in from the weather and making it easy to get from one side of the boat to the other while tacking. Moving forward, the side decks are wide and clutter-free with good, molded-in antiskid and a strategically located step for accessing the cabintop.

Nice, solid handholds are well positioned around both the cockpit and on the cabintop, and the triple-lifeline stanchions are an impressive 28in high. A hard targa overhead provides shelter from the weather, a perfect base for solar panels and the main traveler, a support structure for the dinghy davits, and a good work surface for shoving that big main into its stack pack.

A pair of seats flanks the grill, which is set in a framework running along the back of the cockpit. These seats proved to be immediately popular with the guests we had aboard for our test sail, and make a great spot for conversing and watching the world go by.

This is no mere porch door, but a serious piece of marine engineering that will be more than capable of standing up to dirty weather. This arrangement may be anathema to some cruising cat manufacturers, but in the case of the LITE, it results in an efficient, seagoing galley, with sufficient counter space for two top-opening cold-box spaces, a wealth of storage cabinets and even good ventilation, thanks to a strategically positioned hatch overhead the cooker.

The arrangement also provides that much more space in the saloon for people to circulate around the dining table: which not only lowers to create a large double berth, but can be hinged and swung about into no fewer than four different configurations, depending on the number of people having dinner.

A pair of hinged front windows opens up on two sets of gas struts to admit fresh air. Aft was a large storage area, which is given over to yet another berth in the four-cabin layout. We had light breezes on Biscayne Bay for our sail, but they were more than adequate to put the boat through its paces. With its self-tacking headsail and large main, the boat is specifically designed for shorthanded sailing and works admirably in this capacity.

Despite the lack of wind, the LITE ghosted nicely through the flat water, coming about easily and providing a pleasant sail. On a close reach, we were able to sustain a couple of knots of boat speed in 5 knots of true wind. The cable steering was responsive, and with the sails set, coming about was a matter of just turning the wheel.

Years ago I had the pleasure of sailing a standard reefed down on Sydney Harbor in squally weather with gusts in the upper 20s, and I can assure you the boat performs just as well in a blow. Despite its outboards, I would be perfectly comfortable taking this boat on coastal passages as well.

Engine controls are to starboard, and, the engines are as quiet and reliable inshore as any diesel. With the throttle at three-quarter speed we had no problem maintaining a respectable 5. A pair of 25hp Hondas is also available.
